SIKHS FROM NORTH EAST USA ASSEMBLE AT TIME SQUARE, NEW YORK TO COMMEMORATE THE 34TH ANNIVERSARY OF ATTACK ON DARBAR SAHIB, AMRITSAR, PUNJAB BY INDIAN TROOPS
Newyork – In June 1984 Indian Army attacked the Golden Temple Complex, the most sacred shrine of Sikhism and 36 other Sikh Gurdwaras and massacred more than 30,000 innocent Sikh pilgrims. This laid the foundation for an independent sovereign Sikh State, Khalistan.
In the last 34 years the Indian authorities have unleashed a reign of terror through gross violation of human rights of Sikhs in an attempt to extinguish the calls for freedom and Sikh independence.
In November 1984 tens of thousands of innocent Sikhs were slaughtered in Delhi and over 130 other cities throughout India by well-orchestrated mobs under the direct supervision of senior Indian politicians and officials.
Over 250,000 Sikhs have been murdered and disappeared since 1984. Many Sikh political prisoners still languish in Indian jails without charge or trial and others have been falsely charged and sentenced to life imprisonments and death penalty. Illegal detention and torture of Sikhs is common place and well documented by independent human rights organizations.
In 2015 there were numerous incidents of sacrilege and desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS), the divinely revealed holy book of Sikhism by unruly elements.
On June 1st, 2015, the Sikh Scripture SGGS was stolen from a Gurdwara in Burj Jawahar Singh Wala. On the morning of October 12th, 2015 more than 110 pages of SGGS were found lying on the ground in front of a Gurdwara in village Bargari.
On October 14th, 2015 around 6000 Sikh protestors gathered in Kotkapura holding a peaceful sit-in protest to demand action were indiscriminately fired upon by police. Two protestors died in the firing and more than 50 injured.Despite state wide protests in Punjab and ultimatums to arrest the culprits no one has been arrested for these high crimes. Indian authorities are apparently complicit in these acts of sacrilege.
More recently in 2018, about 600 Sikh families are currently under constant siege in the capital city Shillong (in the Indian State of Meghalaya). A mob of thousands of miscreants is throwing petrol bombs on Sikh Homes and threating the lives of thousands of Sikhs. This is happening when the cops are deliberately looking to the other way.
This trouble started only after the installation of BJP government in Meghalaya 2-3 months back. The attacks are obviously happening on the behest of RSS, a Hindu Nationalist Group, who openly professes a Hindu nation and has attacked minorities like Muslims and Sikhs throughout India.
The SCCEC Working Committee is seeking a meeting with the US State Department to apprise them of the Shillong Sikh situation. In this meeting SCCEC will also share the information of various attacks on minorities, which has occurred during Modi regime and ask US and International Community to take appropriate measures through diplomatic channels to protect minorities in India.
